A trained volunteer or paraprofessional stays with your loved one and takes over your caregiving role, whether for several hours or several days. These brief reprieves from a caregiving situation are healthy for the caregiver and also for the care recipient as a change of daily routine for both.
Respite care may include the following services in accordance with instructions from the regular caregiver:
- Assistance with toileting
- Assistance with dressing
- Assistance with meal preparation
- Reminder to take medication if necessary
- Reading to client
- Calling for help and assistance in any unusual situation by contacting the regular caregiver, the client’s physician, or an appropriate agency.
